Chapter II: The Words Left Unspoken

There was a speech I had planned to give at the Chapter II exhibition.

I had written it carefully in the days leading up to the evening. It was my opportunity to thank everyone, explain what the exhibition represented and reflect on the journey that had brought Nick Fraser’s work back home to East London. But as the evening unfolded, I didn't get the chance to read it.

From the moment the doors opened, I found myself moving from one conversation to another. I was welcoming people, answering questions, hearing memories, introducing strangers and watching people experience Nick’s work for the first time.

Before I knew it, the evening had disappeared.

At first, I felt slightly disappointed that I had not gathered everyone together and said the words I had prepared. But looking back, I realise that the reason I missed the speech was probably the best reason possible.

I was too busy connecting with the people who had come through the door. And really, that was what Chapter II was always meant to be about.

Every person who attended brought something to the evening. Some had followed the project from the beginning. Some had supported the exhibition by sharing posts, buying tickets or sending words of encouragement. Others were discovering Nick’s paintings and his story for the very first time.

People spoke to me about the paintings they connected with, the emotions they saw within them and the questions the work raised. Some shared their own stories of creativity, family, loss and legacy. Others simply wanted to understand more about the man behind the paintings and why so much of his work had remained unseen for so long.

Those conversations meant more to me than I can properly express.

They reminded me that an exhibition is not only about putting artwork onto walls. It is about what happens when people gather around it. It is about the thoughts, feelings, memories and connections that the work creates.

Chapter II represented the second chapter in Nick Fraser’s story.

Nick was born and raised in East London. For more than thirty years, he worked at Tate & Lyle, and outside of work he painted relentlessly.

He was not chasing fame.

He was not painting for galleries.

He painted because he could not imagine not painting.

Over the course of his life, he created an extraordinary collection of work that remained largely unseen. Recognition did not arrive when it should have, but I have always believed that great art has a way of finding its audience, even when it takes decades.

When Nick passed away, my family inherited far more than a collection of paintings.

We inherited sketches, photographs, letters and hours of video footage filmed by my dad. Without fully understanding it at the time, I also inherited a responsibility: to make sure Nick’s voice was not lost.

Bringing that responsibility to life has been one of the most meaningful things I have ever done, but it has also been one of the hardest.

Life does not pause because you are trying to build something important. Behind the exhibition were personal challenges, difficult days and moments when the weight of everything felt overwhelming.

But every time I questioned how I was going to keep moving forward, somebody reached out.

A message arrived.

A phone call was made.

An introduction happened.

Someone offered their time, their knowledge, their encouragement or their belief.

That support slowly carried the project forward.

Chapter II could not have happened without the people who believed in it. I remain incredibly grateful to Tatiana, Khing and the entire team at Shoreditch Arts Club. From the beginning, they understood that this was not simply another exhibition.

They saw the potential in Nick’s story and opened their doors to help bring his work back to the streets where his life and creativity began.

Seeing the paintings displayed in East London, surrounded by people who had come to celebrate them, was difficult to put into words.

I often wondered throughout the evening what Nick would have thought if he could have seen the room.

I do not think he would have quite believed it.

His work had returned home. People were standing in front of paintings that had once existed almost entirely within the private world of our family. They were looking closely, asking questions and forming their own relationships with the work.

That made every late night, every challenge and every setback worthwhile.

Another important moment in this journey came when we reached the final assessment stage of our National Lottery Heritage Fund application.

Whatever the eventual outcome, reaching that stage already told us something meaningful.

It told us that this archive matters.

It told us that Nick’s work deserves to be preserved.

It told us that this is not simply a private family collection, but something that can contribute to our shared cultural heritage.

The letters of support we received described the collection as an important body of work deserving wider recognition and future preservation. Reading those words was emotional because they confirmed something my family has always believed: Nick’s work has a place within our cultural story.

The exhibition may now be over, but Chapter II was never intended to be an ending.

Every person who spent time with a painting, asked a question, shared a photograph or told somebody else about Nick helped the story continue.

That is why I wanted to share the words I never got to say on the night.

To everyone who travelled, attended, supported, encouraged, shared, contributed or simply took the time to walk through the doors: thank you.

Thank you for every conversation.

Thank you for your curiosity.

Thank you for listening to Nick’s story and for sharing your own stories with me.

Thank you for becoming part of this journey.

I may have lost track of time and missed the moment to deliver the speech, but perhaps the conversations we had were more valuable than any formal speech could have been.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping us write the next chapter of Nick Fraser’s story.

Chapter II has begun.
