Phaze One has been a prominent figure in the UK Drum & Bass scene since the mid 90s. As a former resident DJ for Epidemik, he has performed at iconic events like Raindance, One Nation, Best Of British, Innovation, Telepathy, Dreamscape, and Breakin Science. His energetic sets productions have established him as a key player in the rave and electronic music community.

My Story

With roots embedded deep in the heart of the UK underground music scene, He is a curator of sound, a community voice, and a champion of culture. Known for his genre-spanning productions and unmistakable energy behind the decks, Phaze One has spent over two decades shaping dancefloors across the country, from intimate local events to large-scale UK festivals.

From the early jungle scene to drum and bass and House, his love for vinyl and passion for sound system culture have grounded him in a deep respect for music history while consistently pushing boundaries with contemporary sound.

Beyond the booth, Phaze One has been instrumental in nurturing emerging talent. Through studios and independent events, he’s helped develop platforms for up and coming MCs, DJs, and producers, often giving first-time artists their earliest breaks. His Bandcamp archive reflects this — a treasure trove of original productions, mashups, and mixes that echo his passion for storytelling through music.

Phaze One’s musical journey is about connection. Whether he’s dropping bass-heavy rhythms in a late-night set and a festival to wake up and jam at the next day, the intention remains the same: unite people through sound.

As one of the newest additions to the Imaginative Reaction collective, DJ Phaze One embodies the ethos of the platform, a fusion of authenticity, culture, and creative resilience. We are proud to have him as part of our showcase and look forward to sharing more of his story and sonic contributions with the community.

It’s a real honour to shine a light on someone who’s been not only a long-time friend, but a pillar in the underground music scene for decades.

We first crossed paths over a decade ago, when I invited Phaze One to join the lineup at one of my early events in London. From releasing house music together in 2014 and onwards, to playing side-by-side across Essex and the capital, we’ve shared a journey rooted in sound, dedication, and mutual respect.

Phaze One was already tearing up iconic venues like Bagleys, The Coronet, and Camden Palace, playing for legendary brands like Epidemic and Breaking science. He was making waves in the Jungle and DnB world when most were still finding their feet.

Through every chapter, he has shown unwavering commitment to his craft.

A true grafter — working hard all week, producing music in his spare time, and lighting up dancefloors on the weekends. That kind of consistency and passion deserves serious respect.

Recently, he welcomed me back behind the decks at his Colchester-based night ‘liquid drums uk’ and it felt like stepping back into something fun and exciting — a reminder of why we started doing this in the first place. I’ll be joining the crew again this summer for their Camden show, and I can't wait to share some new productions.

Beyond the music, James is also a veteran who served in the British Army — a part of his story that brings even more depth to the man he is today. Every year, he reminds us to reflect and show gratitude. We see you James.
