Adrian Michael Wildsmith
Artist | Poet
Adrian Wildsmith is a mixed media English visual artist and poet from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, whose work emerges from a profound journey through mental health struggles, addiction, and homelessness toward creative healing and self-expression. A graduate of Greenwich University with a degree in Architecture, Adrian's artistic practice is deeply rooted in his personal transformation and the belief that creativity can be a lifeline during life's darkest moments.
My Story
The Journey Through Darkness Adrian's artistic awakening came not from privilege or ease, but from the absolute depths of human despair. After experiencing severe post-traumatic stress, debilitating anxiety, and addiction, he found himself homeless and completely estranged from his family for almost five years—cut off from everyone he loved, drowning in isolation and loneliness. "Slowly slipping through the cracks of society," he describes this period as "hell with a capital 'H'," where panic attacks and all-consuming terror became his daily reality. The darkness was so complete that simple survival felt impossible. Separated from family, unable to hold meaningful employment, and battling the crushing weight of mental illness, Adrian faced what seemed like an insurmountable abyss. It was during this period of absolute desolation that the miraculous began to unfold.
The turning point came not through therapy or medication, but through the desperate acceptance of a friend's offer of a sofa—a last refuge before complete dissolution. What followed were four grueling years of clawing back from the edge, where each day was a battle against the overwhelming urge to surrender. The daily walks with Chief, his friend's golden retriever, along the Grand Union Canal weren't pleasant strolls—they were acts of survival, forced movements through a landscape that felt as foreign as another planet. In those early months, Adrian could barely register the world around him, his mind consumed by panic and the relentless noise of trauma. Yet slowly, almost imperceptibly, something began to shift. Between the suffocating anxiety and crushing despair, tiny moments of awareness crept in—the way light caught water, the stubborn persistence of wildflowers, the simple fact that he was still breathing. These weren't revelations but small mercies, fragments of hope gathered like breadcrumbs on the long, arduous journey back to himself.
Poetry as Pathway Seven years ago, poetry found Adrian "at a time when I was very much looking the other way." Writing became a vital tool for processing his journey through trauma, exploring themes of love, loss, courage, despair, joy, and nature. Despite challenges with dyslexia and executive functioning issues from a childhood car accident, Adrian courageously shares his poetry through video performances, weaving his written words into visual art processes. His poetry reflects the layered complexity of recovery—finding hope within struggle, discovering silver linings in darkness. Through these written explorations, Adrian developed the emotional vocabulary that would later inform his visual art, creating a unified practice where words and images dance together in service of healing.
Breaking the Stigma through Visual Art Adrian's work directly confronts the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly as it intersects with masculinity and societal expectations. His openness about addiction, homelessness, and psychological struggle challenges conventional notions of what it means to be a man in crisis. Through his art and poetry, he offers a different narrative—one where vulnerability becomes strength, where breakdown becomes breakthrough.
Recognition and Impact Adrian has been featured at the prestigious Buckinghamshire Mentmore Art Festival and his work reaches collectors internationally, developing a reputation for stunning commissioned work that transforms personal and professional spaces. His pieces are particularly valued in therapeutic settings, with mental health professionals incorporating his art into healing environments.

All Manner of Interesting Things Podcast
Adrian joins Cheryl Dianne on the All things Matter podcast. They discuss the impact of how personal development and mental health recovery and awareness impacts artistic expression.
I first met Adrian a few years ago when he visited a venue I was managing. He came across as a warm, grounded soul, and we had a brief but thoughtful exchange — mostly around wellbeing and life in general. At the time, I had no idea of his incredible journey or the depth of talent he carried as an artist.
Our paths crossed again at Sunnyside Rural Trust at a Local Art Fair. ran by Anna Scholfield, a key figure in the local art community. It was here Adrian was running a public workshop alongside showcasing his own artwork. My daughter sat down to join in, and it was a joy watching her connect through creativity. That’s when I got to see a glimpse of his practice — vibrant, honest, and deeply personal.
A year later, we crossed paths once more — this time at a local arts fair in Bushey. We arranged to meet for a longer conversation, and it was there I learned more about Adrian’s full story: a powerful journey through recovery, healing, and artistic rediscovery.
Adrian’s work speaks volumes — a fusion of vivid imagery and emotional depth, with poetry woven through each piece. Beyond the canvas, he gives his time and care to the community through his work at Mind Charity, offering support and guidance in the mental health space. His message is one of hope, resilience and creative courage.
It’s an honour to welcome Adrian to Imaginative Reaction — not only as an artist but as a voice for healing through art. I truly believe his story and work are gaining the recognition they deserve, and I have no doubt we’ll be collaborating more in the future.
