SLART

Artist

SLART (Steven Light) is a figurative expressionist artist who works and lives in Swindon, UK. At the age of eight, he discovered that he had been adopted by his grandparents, which set him on a journey of introspection and connection with his biological father and siblings. He has loved drawing since early childhood, spending many hours alone, drawing images from cartoons and animal books. He remains drawn to creating human-centric art, fascinated by the diversity of people, their stories, problems, issues, baggage, quirks, and personalities.

My Story

My work explores human issues through the lens of memento mori and spirituality, while drawing energy and nostalgia from the pop culture and music of the 1980s and 1990s.

Having overcome crippling shyness, lived as a content introvert, and faced chronic illness, I use painting as a means of transformation and expression, often working in oils or acrylics on large canvases that evolve freely from loose concepts or references. Influenced by Jean Dubuffet, David Shrigley and Keith Haring, I embrace playfulness, humour, authenticity, accessibility, and the belief that it’s never too late to forge my own artistic path.

SLART | Outsider Artist Youtube Channel

"I first came across Slart’s work through the connection with The Crypt Gallery, where he currently has an exhibition. His raw, expressive style and narrative voice immediately caught my attention. Much like Nick Fraser, Slart is an outsider artist and I felt a strong connection to both his work and his story.

Like Nick Fraser, Slart has faced chronic illness, and both artists have used painting as a means of transformation and expression. There’s a deep emotional honesty in their work, a sense of release, survival, and communication that goes beyond the canvas.

There’s something incredibly moving about artists who create not just to make something beautiful, but to make sense of pain, resilience, and identity. I’m honoured to feature Slart’s work and to support his creative journey."
