Ellis King

Ellis King paints the quiet strength and loud truths of womanhood.
Blending softness with defiance, her portraits hold space for stories often left untold — intimate, bold, and unafraid. In every brushstroke, a voice. In every face, a mirror.

My Story

Her distinctive style seamlessly blends realism with abstraction, challenging patriarchal narratives and inviting viewers to see themselves in her work. Creating unfiltered realism with expressive, graffiti-like brushwork, King navigates the intersection of fine and modern art, creating pieces that are both intimate and universally resonant.

Born in Norwich in 1989, Ellis initially pursued art before transitioning to a career in charity marketing. In 2019, following the premature birth of her son, she returned to painting as both personal therapy and a protest against the inadequate support provided to women and families during such challenging experiences. This pivotal moment reignited her artistic journey, leading to a body of work that confronts societal inequalities and celebrates the complexities of modern womanhood.

Ellis's paintings transcend traditional portraiture, creating spaces where personal and shared stories converge. Her work has been exhibited widely and is represented by esteemed galleries such as Thompson's Gallery, Clifton Fine Art, and Prince & Pilgrim. Notable pieces like "Queenie" and "Paint Me Like One Of Your French Girls" exemplify her commitment to authenticity and meaningful, contemporary expression.

Connect with Ellis:

“The first time I saw Ellis King’s work was at The Other Art Fair in 2024 and I was completely captivated. Her pieces carried both a quiet power and a fierce honesty that stayed with me. I’ve followed her journey ever since, and was fortunate enough to meet and speak with her at the fair the following year. Ellis’s contribution to the art world — especially as a voice for women — is both timely and timeless. Her ability to speak truth through paint is deeply moving, and her work continues to inspire meaningful reflection. We’re truly honoured to have her as part of the Imaginative Reaction platform, and we’re excited to keep following and supporting her powerful journey.”
